This week we were talking about caterpillars and butterflies, but especially the Very Hungry Caterpillar. On Monday we talked about the caterpillar's life cycle, as well as that of a human being from baby to adult. We drew it on the board and then watched a video of a caterpillar creating their cocoon (chrysalis) and then coming out as a butterfly. As well this week we were starting to focus on blends instead of just the individual letters. We were focusing on the blend "ch" this week that makes the sound "chuh". We really emphasize that yes we know the individual sounds of "c" and "h" but what is the blended sound when they are brought together as "friends"?? We will be continuing our blends throughout the rest of the year and then ending with review of all letters and blends. (-qu, -ou, -ue, -oi, -th, -sh, -ng, -oi, -th, -ng, -di, -ee/-or, -ie, -oa, -oo, -ar and -er)
On Tuesday the kids had to bring in egg cartons (THANK YOU SO MUCH to all families that sent some in we really appreciate it!) :) They were able to paint their caterpillars bodies green and the heads red to match the one from our book. We had to let them dry but then I put antennas and the faces on them!

On Wednesday, we played Roll a Caterpillar. We talked about what each side of the dice meant (what part of the caterpillar to draw) and then we got to go back and play! Thank you Mrs. Huff for letting us borrow your dice! :) They would roll the die and whatever it landed on they had to draw. Now if they rolled head (2) and then head again they didn't have to draw two heads. It was fun to see the different caterpillars that came out of this activity even with the same instructions. On Thursday, we made our caterpillar headbands! They were really excited to wear them all over school!! But on Friday, the kids had to tap into their artistic sides and I believe had the most fun! We took plain white paper and about 6 different colors of paint. We could put just dots of the paint or swirls of the paint on one side of the paper (after folding in half - then opening again) To make the butterfly we needed to put some down the middle for the body. Then you fold the other side over again, having the student smooth it out. Then when we opened them the "ooooo's" and "ahhhhs" were all over the room! They all are beautiful and are so unique just like the kids that created them! :) |
