Flowers, flowers, flowers!

On Monday we learned about the different parts of a flower. We learned that there are 4 parts of the flower. There is the actual flower, the stem, the leaves and then the roots that hold the flower in the ground and allow for it to grow. The students had to use a Q-tip to paint their flowers into a beautiful pattern or design. Then they had to cut out their stem and leaves. Then their parts were labeled and they were ready to go up in the hallway.
On Tuesday we talked about how things grow (plants and flowers) what do they need to grow? (Water, sunlight, somewhere to grow, and plant food) We created our own little green houses that we planted beans in. They were plants on 04/27 and we will keep you updated on their growth progress!
On Wednesday, we went for a nature adventure outside! We needed to look for things in nature. Before this we talked about the fact that if it is still connected to the tree, do not take it because it is still living. If it is on the ground, we may take it to enjoy. We took bags outside and brought some nature inside the classroom to look at closer. Then to make sure nature kept on going we brought it back into nature.

On Thursday, we made our Chrysanthemum flower names. We first read the book by Kevin Henkes, Chrysanthemum. This book is all about accepting our names and realizing they were given to us for a reason and they all have meaning and beauty behind them. We talked about the meaning of some of our friends names. Then we started work on our "my name is unique" flowers. The students had to create their name in the petals, write their name on the line and count the correct number of letters in their name and write that number. They turned out great and they all love their names even more!

On Friday, it was so nice out and we had been having such a cloudy/gloomy week, we decided to take a nature walk outside before computers. We took the time to walk quietly, listen to the birds, observe the beauty around them. We heard frogs, birds, saw a "squirrel home" but no squirrels. They all said it was great to get outside and get that fresh air.

Below in the video, Laney was such an awesome friend and saw Dylan struggling to get on the swing by himself. She taught him a new way to do it and he got it! :) Way to go Dylan and thank you Laney for being a great friend!

Tracking eyes for reading small groups

Hello 4K families! We are trying something new in our small reading groups in 4K! We are still practicing tracking with our fingers, but I thought it would be fun to add another option! We have our one eye tracking sticks! These sticks will be in your child's small group reading bag that they bring home every night! Please have them show you how to use them and that they use them as well. The eye ball needs to go under each word on the page while they are reading. We will be using these during their small group time during centers, so please make sure to remind them that the eyeball tracking stick goes back in their small group reading bab.

As well, a reminder for them is if they cannot remember a word or sound it out (not phonetically correct) to use the picture clues to help them out! Any questions let me know! Thank you, enjoy this beautiful Wednesday!! :)

We were focusing on the blend "sh" this week that makes the sound "shhhhh". We really emphasize that yes we know the individual sounds of "s" and "h" but what is the blended sound when they are brought together as "friends"?? We will be continuing our blends throughout the rest of the year and then ending with review of all letters and blends. (-qu, -ou, -ue, -oi, -th, -sh, -ng, -oi, -th, -ng, -di, -ee/-or, -ie, -oa, -oo, -ar and -er).

Monday we got to go to Ms. DuBois's classroom in 4th grade and meet a chicken named Rudolph! The kids were excited and some were a bit nervous to pet him, but great experience for them overall! :) Thank you Ms. DuBois!
Monday we worked on the lifecycle of a frog and talked more about that. We created some accordian frogs to display our new knowledge of the frog life cycle. (Thank you to Mrs. Jadin for coming in to be with us :)) They turned out really nice and the kids were able to fully learn the lifecycle of a frog. (Egg, tadpole, adolescent frog (4K frog) and then an adult frog) Tuesday we made paper plate frogs. Wednesday we measured our height and our jumps in frogs. The kids were to measure their distance they could jump in frogs on the floor. As well they had to work together and measure one another in the hallway to see how many frogs tall they were. We talked about how frogs are able to jump certain distances, depending on their size. As well, I was gone on Wednesday, so our sub Mr. Pearson skyped me and I got to wake the friends up from their nap on the phone, their faces were priceless! :) Thursday to end our week on frogs we worked on sequencing. We read the book, The Lady who Swallowed a Frog, and tried to remember the order or sequence that occurred.

Hello 4K Families!

I hope you all are enjoying this beautiful weather we are having! We are learning about flowers next week and as a part of it we are doing a project based on the book by Kevin Henkes, Chrysanthemum. In the book she loved her name, until someone made fun of it. I want all friends to love themselves and their names! The great thing about names, is that there is always a reason for choosing the name that a child gets. If you have a story behind your student's name and why you chose it or a meaning of the name from another culture please send on a piece of paper in their take home folders for Thursday April 28th. Thank you so much for all of your help! I appreciate it! :)

We were focusing on the blend "qu" this week that makes the sound "qwah". We really emphasize that yes we know the individual sounds of "q" and "u" but what is the blended sound when they are brought together as "friends"?? We will be continuing our blends throughout the rest of the year and then ending with review of all letters and blends. (-qu, -ou, -ue, -oi, -th, -sh, -ng, -oi, -th, -ng, -di, -ee/-or, -ie, -oa, -oo, -ar and -er).

This week was all about weather! On we talked about different forms of weather, such as: tsunami, tornado, thunderstorms, wind storms, earthquakes, etc. We created some weather flip books so we were able to enhance our learning of familiar things that we know when it comes to weather. Something that the kid really enjoyed was the thunderstorm in a cup! We got cups of water, shaving cream and we discussed what each of those things represented. (Water= sky, shaving cream= clouds and blue food coloring= rain) We first talked about how rain clouds are created and why it does not rain right away, the clouds have to fill up with rain droplets and then it all comes out. As well they learned about different types of clouds and what kind of particles are in the clouds - rain droplets, snow and ice! We finally had some terrific weather this week, so we spent a lot of time outside, we are going to be enjoying the nice weather for the next couple weeks, watching our plants and watching for birds outside our classroom window. (Check out our class plants - tab above) As well we created our own math weather equations using umbrellas and hearts raining down! Check them out below!

As well they loved their root beer float reward on Friday! Way to go kiddos, let's get another reward before the end of the year, keep it up! :)

We earned our 25 smileys! - reward: root beer Floats

4/14/2016

We have been working as a class to get 25 smiley faces into our bucket to get a reward! I always tell my students, we are a team, we win and lose together! Our last reward was a pajama day! We have been working extremely hard toward this reward! Today during the tornado drill they were extremely quiet, respectful to one another and listening - they earned that last smile! :) So we did a vote, and overwhelmingly the decision was ROOT BEER FLOATS! So tomorrow (Friday) we are going to be having root beer floats for our afternoon snack! Congrats to my 4K friends, way to go! :)
