We were focusing on the blend "sh" this week that makes the sound "shhhhh". We really emphasize that yes we know the individual sounds of "s" and "h" but what is the blended sound when they are brought together as "friends"?? We will be continuing our blends throughout the rest of the year and then ending with review of all letters and blends. (-qu, -ou, -ue, -oi, -th, -sh, -ng, -oi, -th, -ng, -di, -ee/-or, -ie, -oa, -oo, -ar and -er).
Wednesday we created a class rainbow using our handprints and we made crayon melted raindrops for our windows. We melted our crayons and made our raindrops but they started to crumble, so we are going to use them as crayons! Then we used our knowledge of ROY G BIV and we made a rainbow in the right order of colors! We also learned about how when it rains to create the rainbow effect the sun's rays need pass through the rain drop which reflects the different colors of the spectrum!

We got some new centers this week! In our writing/word work center we got some sight word sundaes - the students have to build sight words in the sundae boat using the letter ice cream scoops. The one that really got them excited was the crack an egg sight word scramble challenge. There are 25 eggs and a sheet with 1-25 on it. The students have to go egg by egg and crack them open to reveal the letters within that spell one of their sight words or a simple CVC (consonant vowel consonant) word. Build a pizza - they have orders that have to be filled for "customers" but they have to follow the order correctly or get a crabby "customer". As well we got a new game called POP for addition and subtraction. They have to spin the spinner (pick 1, 2 or 3 gum pieces) and then has to solve those equations. If they get one wrong they put it back, if they get a POP! they have to put all of their pieces back!
